MLB Showdown

Here’s a comic-book recap of my time at the MLB Showdown Regional Tournament, held at Matchplay in the San Antonio Shopping Mall in Mountain View. The regionals have been happening all across America, and next week they are playing in my hometown of San Diego! I had a lot of fun, more than I expected to. After 6 matches spanning 7.5 hours, I was completely spent! I wished that I could have done a little bit better (where was my rookie luck?) but there’s always next time.

There were a lot of people at the event, and I even ran into Sean, a fellow camera enthusiast and COBA member. The people overall were very nice and fun to play with.

San Francisco

This entry is coming a little late, but on Saturday, Rae and I travelled to the City to check out an art exhibition at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts with Susan. Prior, we were wandering along Mission Street, eating lunch at the park and taking photographs of churches, walls, the SFMOMA, and birds with strange protuberances on their feet and heads!

We checked out a set of anti-war protest art pieces at The LAB. Saturday was the last day, and when we arrived, they were starting to take down the pieces. Boo! Fortunately, enough pieces were still standing to get a feel for the exhibition’s tone (i.e. decidedly against the current administration).

July 2003 COBA Meeting

Wednesday, July 9th, 2003

We had a nice turnout for the July meeting of the Camera Owners of the Bay Area. Uwe Steinmueller of Digital Outback Photo presented techniques for making black and white photographs using color digital SLR cameras. He and his wife have an exhibition going on at the Gallery House in Palo Alto, which is located next to the Printer’s Inc. Cafe on California Avenue. They also have several prints on display at the Pacific Art League in downtown Palo Alto.

Even though black and white photography is clearly not replicating reality, it often seems more real than color photography. I’d wager that it’s because our society has grown up reading newspapers. Those grainy black and white photos imprint on us a reality that is outside of our own one playing in color. Television and the Internet are doing a good job of pushing B&W images out of sight for people growing up today, and I wonder what they think when they see a black and white photo. Is it more real to them or does it represent an abstraction of reality?
