Nouvelles

Last Thursday, I had lunch with Oliver and Leighton at Seto Sushi in Sunnyvale. A photo that I took of their company is in the December 2003 issue of Entrepreneur Magazine. Centerscore is listed as one of their hot companies in Mobile Gaming. If you’re enjoying mobile gaming on your cell phone, you have Centerscore to thank!

Stupid Stanford lost to Cal in the latest Big Game this weekend. Rae and I were up in Berkeley during the game, which featured 7 fumbles by Cal. If your defense is causing that much havoc, your offense has got to pick it up. Stanford’s offense didn’t, and the end result is a two-game losing streak to the Bears. While driving on Shattuck, we saw Loren and Suzie crossing the street. I was able to yell their name and wave back to them, but the light changed and we were driving across the intersection. Fortunately, they recognized who was yelling their names and waved back!

Underwater Eric

Underwater Eric

It’s hard to keep track of where Eric these days. One minute, he’s swimming with Great White Sharks off the coast of San Diego and the next minute he’s travelling with Vienna Teng in Kentucky. His return to the Bay Area is heralded by a cell phone call with the line, “Adam Tow! I’m back,” followed by “until Tuesday, whereupon I leave for…”

Eric gave a talk the other day to the Wildlife Photographers of Silicon Valley. Monte Smith and his wife set up the user group about two years ago, the same time when I started the Camera Owners of the Bay Area. I remember the two of them being at Eric’s COBA presentation earlier this year. As usual, Eric wowed the crowd with his underwater photos and equipment. He has indeed become powerful.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Monterey Bay Aquarium

I was supposed to cycle with Stuart and Amy around 1:30 pm, but they were running a little late leaving the office. As a result, I rode the few miles to the downtown area in Monterey. When the aquarium came within view, I said to myself, “Wait a second! That’s the Cetacean Institute from Star Trek IV!” Sure enough, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is where they filmed scenes of the fictional Sausalito Cetacean Institute. As I had to get back to ride with Stu and Amy, I didn’t get to go into the aquarium on Friday afternoon.

At the conclusion of the DV Offsite on Saturday, I found myself with an afternoon waiting to be spent! Instead of driving back home, I drove back to the aquarium. A couple of things that I noticed included:

DVF Offsite

DVF Offsite

This weekend, I attended an offsite for the Reuters Digital Vision Program at the Asilomar conference grounds in Monterey. I have known about Asilomar for several years now, but I never knew that it was run by the State of California. For some reason, I had always thought of the place as being an expensive coastal resort. Turns out rates for leisure guests can be found for as low as $114/night. With the beach only a few steps away, that’s a price you can’t beat!

I arrived a few hours earlier than Stuart and Amy, with whom I had planned to cycle. When they did arrive, the rain clouds were threatening. It was just our luck that the rain started to fall right as we left the parking lot. We went out on a 17-mile loop that took us through the Pebble Beach golf courses. I didn’t spend much time looking at the golf course, as I was thinking more about how cold and wet I was! It was beyond freezing out there on our ride. I remember riding to Steve’s house (our former cook at the French House) in the rain, but this ride took the cake. By the time that I got back to my room, I was soaked from head to toe.

LJCDS 10-Year Reunion

LJCDS 10-Year Reunion

I felt the past ten years wash over me like rushing water on the shores when I walked into the Beach House Brewery Saturday night for my high school’s 10-year reunion. Memories enveloped me like the rising tide, around the feet, ankles, knees, and legs. I had thought my 5-year college reunion was a bizarre trip down memory lane, but this was much more eerie. 10 years is a long time, more than enough to shed away the awkward, clique, dorky, nerdy, or jock attitudes from high school. 10 years, however, is not enough time to forget the LJCDS Alma Mater; I surprised myself when I started to sing the song following Jared’s lead!

Thanks go out to the organizers, including Jared Polis, Marejka Shaevitz, Barrett Achartz, Julie Tice, Alison Jones, Marc Dare, and everyone else who helped to organize the event. It was really, really nice to see all of you again. I only wish that we had more time. 3 hours is certainly not enough time to recap the past ten years. In the past 10 years, a number of us have gotten married, so congratulations to Brittany, Barrett, David, Tammi, Jill, Alison, Jenifer, Cheryl, and Faye (and anyone else who I missed!).

Dia de los Mojitos

Dia de los Mojitos

Randy and I, along with DJ’s Osvaldo, Javier, and Joon-Mo, hosted Dia de los Mojitos on Saturday, the day after Halloween. This was the last party of the year at Clubertino, and Randy vowed to make it a night people would not easily forget. Black light, glow in the dark bubbles and highlighters, along with a streaming karaoke room were the main attractions Saturday night. There was of course, the customary bottles upon bottles of alcohol, including the famous Mojitos. Randy also had origami books out along with twist balloons, which people made into various animal, floral, and genital forms!

The night before, I had gone out with Rae to San Francisco to the Rotten Tomatoes Halloween Party. I dressed up as… what exactly would you call putting all of your hair in front of your hair and covering it up with a hood? I don’t know, but it certainly looked scary to everyone who saw it! Earlier in the day, Elsa rode her bike to Stanford to attend a DVF seminar. The outfit was subtle enough to make people suspect that something was different about me, but not so over the top that it was outrageous. I did, however, get some cat calls from some workers along Frenchman’s Road. I should have yelled back at them in a deep, manly voice, but I was too far gone by the time I thought of the embarassing deed.
