Christine and Ben Wedding

A couple of weeks ago, Rae and I drove down to Malibu yet again for another wedding, this time Rae’s friends from college, Christine and Ben. It was funny driving down Highway 1 and seeing the giant obelisk of Pepperdine University. Just two weeks prior, I was at Javier and Ginger’s wedding just a few blocks away!

The weather was fantastic for the wedding, which was held at a friend’s house right on the beach. I kid you not, there’s stairs off of the deck that take you right onto the beach!

Congratulations, Ben and Christine!

San Diego

San Diego

This weekend, I flew down to San Diego to check out the Tribal Digital Village project in North San Diego. Sukumar, one of the Fellows in the DVF Program, spearheaded the project when he was an executive at HP. Three years later, the Tribal Digital Village is blossoming and ready to take the next step on its own.

The headquarters to the Tribal Digital Village is home to a 45Mbps connection to the Internet. From there, Lucent radio systems broadcast Internet signals to various reservations across North San Diego Country. These signals are collected at and beamed across the reservations using 802.11b wireless technology. The entire network infrastructure was designed and built by tribal community members, including Matt Rantanen, a friend of mine from the old Blue Mountain days.

Earlier during the weekend, I hung out with friends from high school, including Jerry, Dave, Barrett, and John. I toured Joe around downtown La Jolla; he and I got a kick out of seeing the cute little seals at the La Jolla Cove. They are so fat and cudly on the beach; in the water, however, they are like guided torpedoes!

Doctor Air

And now for something completely different…

I’m taking Art 174: Digital Art in Public Spaces this quarter. We’re investigating the use of digital media in, you guessed it, public spaces. We’ve taken a look at artists such as Matthieu Laurette, Marc Horowitz and Jon Brumit, M.River and T.Whid Art Associates, and Temporary Services. Much of the work that we focused on centered on public interventions, something I would ordinarily not consider as being art. I’ve always thought that art was something hung on the wall or viewed at a gallery. Having shot dozens of dance performances over the past few years, I’ve come to associate ephemeral, time-based performances as art. Seen in this light (slightly tilted, of course), the public interventions undertaken and documented by these artists can be categorized as art.

Hakone Gardens

A couple of weeks ago, Rae and I visited Hakone Gardens, a 19th-century Japanese residential garden in Saratoga. I’ve always wondered what Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s Japanese-style home looks like in Woodside; I bet a part of it resembles Hakone Gardens!

Visit if you are in the mood for a relaxing afternoon on the weekend. Here are some photos from our excursion to Hakone Gardens.

Trade vs. Aid

Today’s guest blogger for today is Heather Ford.

I’m making use of her generous Creative Commons license from her post recapping the Paul Rice and Greg Steltenpohl seminar yesterday at the DVF offices. Thanks, Heather!
