RT Halloween Party

Rotten Tomatoes held their annual Halloween party at Suede in San Francisco. Rae and I, with the help of super-seamstress Rae’s mom, transformed ourselves into the characters from Hero. With my long hair and 2-week mustache and goatee, I played the role of Tony Leung, a.k.a Broken Sword. Rae became Maggie Cheung, a.k.a. Flying Snow. Our group also included Jet Li (Stephen Wang) and Zhang Ziyi (Elaine Yu).

Hao’s BBQ

Hao’s BBQ

I thought that I knew the Stanford campus inside and out, but I guess the old Farm still has a few secret hideouts waiting to be discovered. This weekend, we went to a BBQ and housewarming at Hao’s foothill retreat at the Wilcox Solar Observatory. I remember running through the Stanford Foothills as an undergraduate — back when there were no paved roads up to the Dish — but I don’t ever recall passing this building! The living space reminded me of the Row Houses Bob or Xanadu, but downsized to fit just one person instead of 60-70 people!

Wushu people like Stephen, Tami, George, Doris, and Ben were present, along with a number of Stanford/Cal/Utah friends of Hao’s. Rae and I had a big dim sum restaurant just before heading to the party, so we weren’t too much in a mood to eat (looked yummy though!).

The weather has turned cold and wet this weekend. I guess it’s time to start layering the clothes and putting on more blankets at night!

Wushu Central Demo

Wushu Central Demo

Wushu Central gave a wushu demonstration at the Kid’s Fair held at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds this weekend. Demo practioners include Coach Chang, Liz, Landy, Rae, Lawrence, Sean, Brandon, Kevin, Krista, Tracy, Ashley, and Michelle. They performed various wushu sets such as straightsword, staff, spear, broadsword, drunken sparring, fanzi, straightsword sparring, and longfist.

I think the kids and parents in attendance greatly enjoyed the demonstration. I saw a number of people approach Coach Chang, Lawrence, and others to ask about Wushu Central.

COBA October 2004

COBA October 2004

The October 2004 COBA meeting featured a wrapup of the recent Photokina conference in Cologne, Germany, a preview of Canon’s latest products, including the Canon EOS-20D and the EOS-1Ds Mark II, and a demonstration on using graphics tablets.

There was a lot of DSLR news coming out of Photokina. In addition to the 16.7 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II being released from Canon, Nikon had its 12.4 megapixel D2X, Fuji had its 12.4 megapixel S3 Pro, Leica with its 10MP digital back for the R8 and R9, Olympus with the EVOLT E-300, and Mamimya with its amazing 22MP digital back. Epson was showing off the very-retro RD-1 digital rangefinder; it’s not a digital SLR, but it does have a DSLR-sized imaging sensor, which means the image quality from it should be quite good.

Of course, there were dozens of consumer and prosumer digital cameras released at Photokina. I can’t cover them all, but I can point you to links that talk all about them.

Supriya and Mitchell

Supriya and Mitchell

On Sunday afternoon, Rae and I attended the wedding on Supriya and Mitchell at the San Mateo Garden Center. Though I’ve attended numerous Bar and Bat Mitzvah’s growing up in San Diego, I had never been to a Jewish wedding until this weekend. Rabbi Ari Cartun did a great job in making accessible the many Jewish customs we witnessed, including the role of the chuppah (wedding canopy) and the sheva brachot (seven blessings).

Having recently returned from France (the photos and commentary are coming!), I found it very cool to see Tamar, Courtney, and Liliana at the wedding, all of whom we were with in the Stanford in Paris program. It’s been 8-9 years since I’ve seen Liliana, who’s teaching down in Albuquerque. If I had known that she was there, I would have called her up when I visited Suzannah! I also met up with several Stanford students from ‘96 and ‘97, including Jamie, Xin-Hua, Guillermo, and Josh.

Year in 480 Seconds

Year in 480 Seconds

Last school year, I received an email from the principal at the Mt St Patrick College in Murwillumbah, Australia. He wanted to show his students my Year in 60 Seconds movie to impart the wisdom that “every day is special” and emphasize “the importance of memory.” I created a slower, one-second per image version of the movie that clocked in at 480 seconds.

On June 10, 2004 (yes, I know this entry is very late), my Year in 480 Seconds was shown to the Mt St Patrick College student body! Take a look at the photo and you’ll see a veritable army of new tow.com followers! Okay, perhaps not, but it’s no less cool to see!

I really started taking daily photos since 1999. I haven’t stopped since, amassing nearly 70,000 photos in 6 years. Perhaps it’s time to update my Year in 60 seconds into 6 Years in 360 seconds?
