RDVP Portraits

On Friday, Rae and I photographed the 2005-2006 group of Digital Vision Fellows at Stanford. There’s a few more fellows remaining to be photographed, and I will capture most of them at the October 4 welcoming reception. It’s always exciting to meet a new batch of fellows and hear about their projects.

Vi, Carlos, Stuart, and I have been hard at work the past few weeks launching the new website for the Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship Program. The main goal of the redesign was to display more timely information from the fellows themselves. We’ve got all of them writing in their own blogs on our new interactive space. The most recent posts and polls are pulled from that site and displayed on the RDVP homepage. We’re also displaying information about upcoming events, program highlights, and alumni news on the homepage.

FeedLounge Meetup

Alex and Scott of FeedLounge were in the Bay Area for meetings. They held a get together for current and prospective users of their excellent web-based newsreader at Borders in Palo Alto. It’s been quite some time since I last saw Alex, and it was good to reconnect with him!

Football Uniforms

Monday, September 19th, 2005

Found an interesting article on football uniforms on ESPN’s Page 2. Now that the season has started — though my Chargers are playing like it’s still the preseason — it’s time to admire or be shocked at some of the new uniforms in the league.

I think the new, yet old-school, Bills uniform is pretty sweet. Makes me wonder and hope for the day when the Chargers ownership will finally acquiesce and bring back the beautiful powder-blue uniforms.

On the flip side, the Bengals uniforms look horrid. The helmet is cool, but what’s up with the paper cutout uniforms?!? Arizona has a meaner looking logo, but the jerseys and pants could use some better coordination.

Readers: What uniforms are your favorite? Which ones do you want revised?

smugmug maps

Monday, September 12th, 2005

The wizards at smugmug have done it again with the release of smugmug maps. Annotating your images with location information will allow you to overlay your images onto Google Maps.

I’ve had it on my to-do list to write an application like this for quite some time. Now I can scratch it off since smugmug has written it for me!

Bruce Lee: Bosnian Symbol of Unity

Monday, September 12th, 2005

This article came out of left-field. Bruce Lee, worshipped by the Bosnian Croats, Serbs, and Muslims in the ethnically diverse city of Mostar, will be the town’s new symbol of unity. From the Reuters article:

“We plan to erect the statue in November in the center of the city,” Veselin Gatalo, a member of the Urban Movement organization, told Reuters by telephone on Monday.

“This will be a monument to universal justice that Mostar needs more than any other city I know.”

He said Mostar, scene of fighting between Muslims and Croats in 1993-1994, needed a symbol of justice, mastery and honesty — virtues upheld by the late Chinese-American actor.

Studio Lighting

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

Studio lighting is the featured presentation for the COBA meeting on September 14, 2005. I recently purchased some AlienBees monolights, softboxes, and accessories and have been immersing myself in the world of studio lights.

We’ll also have a recap of recent camera news, including the Canon EOS 5D and the new Nikon Coolpix digital cameras with built-in 802.11b/g wireless support. Gil Draper will also talk briefly about a new camera group that he is forming.

More information about the meeting can be found here.

Barclays Global Investors Grand Prix

Barclays Global Investors Grand Prix

The fifth running of the Barclays Global Investors Grand Prix (née San Francisco Grand Prix) cycling race was held today in San Francisco. Rae and I arrived at 11:00 am, an hour after the men’s race had started. Due to a variety of difficulties, including sponsorship problems, there was no women’s race this year. There was an opportunity, however, for amateurs to ride the course at 8:00 am. I would have liked to have gone, but I didn’t fancy the idea of waking up at 6:00 to get there by 7:30. Maybe next year!

Rae had to leave shortly after noon to attend a bridal shower at Park Chow. I stuck around to the end of the race, making my way towards the Embarcadero where the finish was. I ran into photographer and COBA member, Dennis, who was taking photos for Café Grecco in North Beach. As you might guess, there were tons of camera toting and bicycle loving fans on the streets enjoying the bike race.
