Photographing Munich

Munich

Last night, Rae and I watched Munich, Spielberg’s take on the Israeli reaction to the Munich Massacre of 1972. While reading reviews for the movie this morning, I came across an article by the still photographer for the film on DigitalJournalist. I have helped out in the past with my friend’s shorts, and I’d welcome the opportunity to do some photography for a big motion picture.

As for the film, I agree with James Berardinelli’s review:

A film of uncommon depth, intelligence, and sensitivity, Munich defies easy labeling. Watching the movie is like reading a top-notch espionage thriller by Le Carre or Deighton. Yet, at the same time, this is a visual experience. The moral and ethical elements, layered atop a story that is ripe with suspense, put to shame Hollywood’s typical ventures into this genre. Munich is an eye-opener - a motion picture that asks difficult questions, presents well-developed characters, and keeps us white-knuckled throughout.

During the film, I kept getting a shaking suspicion that I knew the actor who played Papa. In a moment of clarity, I paused the film and screamed to Rae, “It’s the bad guy from Moonraker!” Yes, Michael Lonsdale, a.k.a. Hugo Drax is still making films, twenty five years after his villanous turn in Moonraker. Interestingly enough, the next James Bond, Daniel Craig was also in Munich as a South African muscle.

Hines Ward in Korea

Nice article about Asian Americans in sports on ESPN. Gotta love the shot of Hines Ward in traditional Korean garb. I see that Timmy Chang is playing for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe for the Eagles. I’m surprised he wasn’t drafted nor stuck with a team in the offseason last year.

All You Can Eat Update

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

There’s an update to the post I made the other week on the all you can eat story.

Turns out there was a poll on AOL about the story, and out of 73,000 responses, 76 percent were on the side of the restaurant.

Bulletin board writers who sided with the restaurant’s decision chastised Dershem for being a poor mother, for committing a sin of gluttony, for typifying the obese and wasteful culture in the United States and for wasting food when kids in Asia and Africa are starving. They also called her names linked to farm animals and the mentally challenged.

Those who sided with Dershem said she was within her rights at an all-you-can-eat buffet, that buffet food costs are low and they should expect some waste, that it was false advertising to prohibit a paying customer.

It’s too bad the restaurant didn’t take photos of the heaping mounds of food still left on her plate. That would go a long way towards defining what “some waste” was in her case. From the way the restaurant owners described her situation, it was more than just a piece morsels of food. Sorry, Wendy, you’re in the wrong on this one.

If you’re attending the COBA meeting tomorrow, be sure to bring your camera bags, cases, and do-it-yourself gadgets. Furthermore, if you’re looking to sell some camera bags you’re no longer using, bring them too!

Also remember that we’ve moved from SLAC to Cordura Hall at Stanford University. Map and Directions here.

All-You-Can-Eat or All-You-Can-Waste?

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

Was forwarded an interesting article on an all-you-can-eat experience in Des Moines.

Dershem joined her boyfriend, Jason Trotter, and her children, Madison, 7, and Carter, 5, at the Dragon House Saturday for the $5.95 all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet. It was their favorite spot, and the Des Moines woman and her children had dined there frequently since the children were babies. She said her group was one plate into the experience when a restaurant employee approached.

“They told us we are not welcome there anymore. We waste too much food,” said Dershem, 28. “But the buffet is all you can eat. And you know kids. They won’t always eat everything and they want something else.”

Manager Kent Cao confirmed that Dershem was told not to come back if she continued to waste food. A waitress and cashier watched the group on past occasions and were concerned.

“They just take one bite and throw it away,” said cashier Lin Huyen. “They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food.”

Managers at two other buffet restaurants, Old Country Buffet in Des Moines and Buffet City in Clive, said they have never warned customers about how much they take

I feel bad if I can’t finish all the food that I’ve gotten. I love to gorge at these restaurants, but I do limit the amount that I get to what I know I can finish. Of course, if there is something on my plate that I don’t like, I’m not going to continue eating it. I’m of the opinion that you taste many pieces of food, find the ones you like, and pile it on the next trip to the buffet line.

Where you do stand at all-you-can-eat places?

Held So Close in Ohio

Wright State University held their annual Asian Culture Night a couple of weeks ago in their gorgeous student union. Named after the famous Wright Brothers, the Wright State University is located near Dayton, Ohio. Facing East Dance and Music were invited to headline the event. There was a roving exhibition on Angel Island on campus, and FEDM performed excerpts from Held So Close, a feature-length dance performance celebrating the poets of Angel Island.

I just noticed that the header graphic for this post is eerily similar to the one I took in September, 2003! Different angle, of course, but same scene.
