All about hair
The title of this document says it all. The topic of this musing is about hair. We've all, at one point or another, had hair on top of our heads. Some of us have grown it out, cut it all off, kept it short, or lost it over the years.
The length and style of your hair often determines how you remember an important event or time in your life. When you see a picture of yourself from the past, the most distinguishing feature of you, aside from your clothes or glasses, is your hair. If it was long, a guy might recall the rebel days of youth. If it's really short or shaved, a former military person might be reminded of his/her service days. Finally, if someone's bald, seeing a picture of him with hair might depress him to no end or delight them if they prefer the Mr. Clean look. As for me, when I think of the time I spent in France, I can't help but picture myself with long hair. And, when I reminisce about 1999, I can't help but picture myself with very short or a shaved head.
The style of hair also determines specific time periods in human history. Powdered wigs might not be the fashion statement of today, but back in the colonial times, they were all the rage. Long hair on guys was great in the 70's, but now it means you're either a computer programmer or a rock star! Hair sprayed hair was a deadly weapon for females back in the 1980's and the shaved head became popular when a guy named Mike started shaving regularly to hide his receeding hairline.
For those of us who do have hair, it's a constant chore to keep it looking good day in day out (unless you just don't care!). Wake up on the wrong side of the bed (or worse yet, if you showered before you went to sleep), and your hair will look like you've been watching Bride of Frankstein one too many times!
This rather long section is dedicated to the various hair styles that I have had throughout my life. I've broken them down into three basic categories:
Ready to learn about hair? On y vas!
Many of the pictures that I have posted on this site were taken when I shaved my head or had really short hair, mainly because that's when I bought my first camera. For most of my life, however, my hair was a little longer than shaved, but it was most certainly not long. In short, it was normal, short, and conservative hair. When I was a kid, I had the classic Asian bowl cut. In middle and high school, I began parting it to the right or left side (I changed it from time to time). My first year at Stanford, I kept it the same length that I always had in high school.
All that time, however, I wondered what it would be like to shave it all off or grow it long. I remember during my senior year, we went on the West Coast College Trip, visiting places like Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA. A bunch of juniors decided one night to shave their heads and the result was, I must admit, laughable. However cynical I was when I saw them cavorting around with their shaved heads, I was impressed that they had the cajones to cut it all off. I think it was then that the seed was planted for my head shaving exploits. There was another seed that had been planted some time ago, however, the seed of growing long hair.
I've always wanted to grow my hair long, but for whatever reason, I never did so as a kid or when I was in high school. I remember seeing people with long hair and wondering if I could have the dedication to wait, wait, and wait until it was long enough to pull into a pony tail. It wasn't until I got to Stanford that I made the decision to give long hair a shot. After all, what's the worst thing that could happen other than the fact that I wouldn't like it and cut it off?
After an eternity with short hair, I decided to fulfill a life-long dream to grow my hair long and become a "rebel". I began the quest in my sophomore year at Stanford, letting it grow through Winter and Spring quarters. When I arrived in France, it was the longest it's ever been. I was able to take a strand of hair from the front and pull it all the way down to my chin. For me, that was like, "Wow!"
Alas, it was to be cut. On October 10th, 1995, the day of the another La Grève in Paris, I walked into a hair salon recommended by my host family and had Delphine cut my hair. But, I didn't chop it all off, leaving it somewhere in between long and short. The result was, in my opinion, a great hair cut! My friend Clara Lu agrees, saying it was the best cut of hair that I've had since.
Still, a part of me still regrets cutting it in the first place; if I had kept going, I would have had really long hair by the time I returned to American soil in 1996. But, life isn't about regrets, but second chances, right?
The second time that I had long hair was at the end of my Stanford career. I had it shaved at the end of my junior year at Stanford. Through the summer, it was short and growing, growing through my trips to Boston and to Japan with my friend, John Blake. And boy, did it grow slowly! I am fond of using the quote, "Like a plant, it's growing, but you can't see it growing!" By the time I graduated, however, it was well on its way to getting long again. Unfortunately, it was long hair short-lived, as I was compelled to cut it for an important family wedding. After all, I had to be respectful in front of all the relatives! I put up a little fight, but at the end of the day, family duty and honor prevailed, and the locks were chopped off once again.
At the time of this musing, I've only had long hair twice in my life, once in 1995 and again in 1997. After I shaved my head again in April, 2000, I figured that my long hair days were long behind me. A future of shaved heads and/or short hair beckoned until I saw the Mission:Impossible 2 trailer. The hair that Tom Cruise had was absolutely amazing, and I decided to once again heed the call of the long hair gods.
I think the end result will be something similiar to the hair that you see in the picture at the beginning of this musing, long but not too long. They say that the third times the charm, and we'll see just how true that is sometime at the end of 2000 to 2001.
4/14/2000--00:56. 30 minutes later, the hair is all gone again. I used a 2 Guard this time.
I wrote this in my journal entry on April 14, 2000, the day I reverted back to 1999 form and shaved my head. Hair today, gone tomorrow!
In 1999 and through a good part of 2000, I regularly shaved my head. Although I went to the skin a number of times, I settled on a one or two guard most of the time.
When I was selected as the French House Theme Associate during my junior year at Stanford (for senior year), I celebrated in part by shaving my locks completely off. This was the first time that I had shaved my head before and it was quite a shock! I certainly gave my future French House compatriots a scare when they saw me at the Eurotrash party that night; they just didn't know who they hired, did they now?
I remember being likened to a Chinese monk, especially when I wore my Tai-Chi shirt that I got in Hong Kong in 1994. You see what a difference a particular hairstyle makes? It can turn anyone into a rebel, a monk, a professional, or a "normal" person!
Since that fateful night in 1996, I have shaved my head a number of times. I started again in 1999 and continue the trend of shaving, growing back, and shaving it back through the middle of 2000, when I decided to go back to the long hair route, with a short stop at "normal" hair.
There are a number of benefits to shaving your head. Here are a few:
Everyone should at least shave their heads once in their lifetime. It might look strange at first, but it eventually grows on you. Plus, it's soooo easy to take care of your hair when you don't have any! Shower right before going to sleep, and you won't have to worry about waking up with your hair sticking up in all directions!
You shouldn't be afraid of cutting all of your hair back. After all, it's going to grow back, you know? Don't worry about what other people are going to think. It's what you think that ultimately counts. If you've ever considered it, but were too afraid, get over that fear and treat your inner desires to a little gift. Remember, in the immortal words of Garry Grundy, it's all good!
Don't take my word for it, there are millions of people out there in the world who are choosing the shaved look by choice. For more information, check out these excellent sites:
Finally, if you are steadily losing your hair, you may want to considering going all the way and shaving it all off. Michael Jordan did that and avoided looking like Clyde the Glide Drexler later in his career. After all, it's going to go away sooner or later, why not accelerate the process on your terms, instead of the hair's terms?
I will admit that there is downside to shaving your head, but it's not that bad when you think about it. The worst thing about shaving it all off is waiting for it all to grow back! The next five to six months are going to be hell as your hair takes on a porcupine look before you can start to comb it down. This is the time for having lots of hats and caps, or staying at home all day long! Ultimately, it's like that in-between stage between longish hair and long hair: a minor inconvenience.
Finally, my suggestion to guys (heck, even girls!) is this: if you haven't shaved it once in your life, to grab those clippers and cut it all off!
If you've gotten this far, you must sign my guestbook! Seriously though, hair is something that preoccupies us for much of our lives; or, if you have male pattern baldness, it's the lack of hair which probably preoccupies you. Our hair styles helps us to remember the good times, the bad times, and everything in between. A good haircut can do a lot to rising one's confidence, just as a bad haircut might sink it.
At the end of the day, however, you have to realize that hair is just a collection of dead cells sitting on top of your head. Do what you want to do with it, grow it out, keep it short, or shave it off. Express yourself, have a ball, and don't be too concerned about it. After all, it's all good!
On December 27, 2000, I got my first haircut by a professional in what I believe was almost two years. I was in San Diego and went to the hairdresser of one of my relatives. I've always heard his name throughout the years, but I never met him, until now. Alberto did a great job of keeping up with my picky hair habits, as I showed him pictures of me from my long hair, short hair, and no hair days, in addition to a playing of the Mission:Impossible 2 trailer.
At the time of this update's writing, I am about to take a trip over to France. It's been nearly five years since I was last in Europe, which also marked a time when I had rather longish hair. In a sense, it's as much a return to the past as it is an adventure to a brand new world. My hair's ready, and now it's time to finish my packing!
I last shaved my head the night of April 13, 2000. It's been over a year and I can safely say now that my hair is quite long. it's not quite the length of my hair circa 1995, but it's getting closer with each passing day. I frequently put the hair in a ponytail and use hairpins to keep the front hair from flopping in front of my face. You see, it's not quite long enough to be able to pull back completely. Give it a few more months, or years, and I might even try a new hairstyle out: the Chinese monk look! That, however, will take a little more than a few years to grow! Hey, I got the time...
For those of you who want to see my hair grow in near-real time, check out my Year In 60 Seconds web page. I have compiled a list of over 300 daily pictures of myself from April 13, 2000 to April 14, 2001 into a Quicktime movie. You can watch my hair grow like a Chia Pet from nothing to something! It's strange to see myself with so many different looks. I remember having no hair and thinking to myself, "This, Adam, this is your preferred look." Now that I have long hair, however, I can't picture myself with no hair at all! People have commented that I have a lot of "looks," meaning I look like a different person all of the time. Maybe it's time to get into acting!
I got my hair trimmed a few weeks ago. It's still very long, but I keep it pulled back in a ponytail or a modified bun. How long will it go???
I got cornrows done on my hair! How many Chinese or Asian people have you seen with cornrows? Thanks to Natasha for the excellent hair styling job!
Hi,
I need some advice. I almost cut my hair short in April 2000. At the time, I had hair down to my lower back. I decided to cut it to just below the shoulders instead. I had instant regrets! My hair has since grown back. I had it trimmed once since. I still think about the time I amost cut it off. I can't seem to get over it. I am know afraid to get a trim. I am afraid the woman will cut off to much! If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate them!
Thanks,
Darrin

hi, i have really long dark gorgeous hair but I am absolutely dying to shave it all off. Should I take the plunge and go for it? Will I have any kind of regrets doing something so drastic? and finally how do i go about getting my head shaved? Should I do it on my own or have it done proffessionally? Lastly, do you consider it sexy on chiks?
thanks

I say go for it, Lily! Your hair will grow back in time if you don't like it, after all. You may want to cut it real short first before you decide to go all the way.
But, if you're feeling adventurous, all you have to do is cut your hair down with scissors before using electric clippers to shave the rest of it off.
Short hair on women is nice. Shaved head? It depends on the person. Good luck with your decision, Lily!

personally, i have had extremely long hair nearly my entire life. in third grade, i made the dreadful mistake of cutting it to ear length all the way around my head. i looked like a boy and was cursed to have a bad hair day every day for the next year. but after that, i decided to grow it waaayyy out and got it down past my waist in great condition! i was known for great hair after that but i recently cut it to me shoulderblade and after thinking it was straight for my whole life, i discovered it was curly (who knew?) and i love it! change is a really good thing when it comes to hair, and i admire you for going through so many styles! long is a really good look for you too!

My best friend shaved her hair, it looked really good. As for my own hair, i must say it looks positively ugly. I'm an asian guy, but im dyin to get a fro (and now that ive seen adam's rows), or cornrows.
Like Adam, my hair has been through many phases stylistically (except long hair and the styles mentioned above)...change is good!
PS- any tips for getting a fro for a straight haired asian guy (or girl?)

hey, love the site! i myself am currently growing my hair out (at one years growth) and have quietly inpsired some of my male friends to do so as well (through example). Sort of a trend starter i guess, hehe. Anyways, that video you made of one years growth is such a great tool for all those "how long will it grow in this many days" questions as they tend to get a little annoying after a while =_= *sigh*. Anyways, like i said, cool site, i can see you've put quite a bit of work into it, it shows!

Yo Adam, nice experimentation with your hair i should say. I've gone thru cutting down my hair to rice grain length too, and now im thinking of growing it into a nice decent looking ponytail, like the one u've got in tyour picture in June 2001, a bit longer though, resting on my upper back. Just tell me what should I do to make it grow the right length from everyside, to give a decent ponytail look? U can see my picture at my website if u get the time and be a better judge. Thanks a lot and keep up the good hair job. :)

It is my desire to shave my head since teenage years. I have not done it because am flatheaded and it's quite ugly to show. I was envious on my friends and relatives then and until now the desire is still there.
I intend to shave my head hoping that it will have more hair when it grows back. Is it true?
Any advise what to do to increase my hair after shaving my head?

I wouldn't recommend the shaved head for everybody. I shaved my head on a whim yesterday and it looks terrible, with, or without, facial hair. My mom says I look like a neo-nazi, my girlfriend refused to kiss me, my dad interpreted it as an act of rebellion or a cry for help. It's an interesting social experiment, but not THAT interesting. Guess I'll be getting reacquainted with the baseball caps of my high school days.

Thanks for sharing your hair adventures.
I'm Chinese too and have had long hair from about the length of your June 16th 2001 photo to long "rocker" hair down to my ass. 15 years of long hair has been a long time so I chopped it all off yesterday. I look kinda dorky now so I'm gonna be shaving it down with a clipper later today. If it doesn't work out, at least I'll know that it only takes about a year to get back to long hair.--posted by Ben @ Thursday, July 29 2004, 3:12 am PDT
I just got my head shaved down to a stubble. I look like a Tibetan monk. I keep grabbing a phantom ponytail and trying to tuck hair that doesn't exist behind my ear. I can feel everything -- sunlight, breezes. It's interesting.
I'm having mixed feelings about the way it looks. 15 years with a ponytail and then BAM -- bald. It doesn't look all that bad, but I'm out of my comfort zone. It doesn't look like me.
I think I'll probably let it grow out. Do you have any tips? I hate going for haircuts, is it possible to avoid it until my hair grows back to ponytail length?--posted by Ben @ Thursday, July 29 2004, 13:09 pm PDT
Ben:
You could always wear a hat as you grow your hair out. I did that from time to time. It helps keep the hair down when it gets to the poofy stage.
I cut my hair once during 2000-2001 (in my Year in 60 Seconds video) for a wedding. Other than that, I just let the hair grow naturally.
Do you have before and after photos? We'd all like to see!

Adam,
Thanks for the advice. It's been a few days, and I'm getting used to it. I may just keep it for a while. It's clean, cool and easy to take care of.
I'm too camera shy to share photos, but I did measure the ponytail: it's 15 inches long. It's going to a cancer society whenever I get to putting in the mail.
Thanks for your site.

The way you style and cut you're hair is a proven fact to show alot about you're personality; extremely long hair is said to give off an appearance of a serene, exotic, artistic, passionate personally, very short to shaved entirely is said to give off the appearance of short tempers, impatience, impulsiveness, spontanious, and I think you can get the picture... Just google it if you want to learn more. By the way, the very first thing people notice about you... Is you're hair. Are you going to have any and whats it going to say about you?
Dear Laura and anyone else wanting to grow you're hair back:
I'm sorry, but there is no natural way to make you're hair itself grow back faster, there are of course expirimental and laser type procedures and implants for gradual hairloss, but there is no cure for natural baldness as of yet. However to manage hair that a person already has and speed up the growing process just a bit is to go in and have regular trims/cuts. You don't even have to take off more then an inch if you don't want to(Hair growth is different for everyone but rounded down it grows about one to two inches a month), but as all hair ages it gets split ends which can go up to the root in some case, and actually -slowing- the hair growth process. It also splits hair's and very easily makes it fall out, and/or feel rough or dry. It's good to trim these split ends once every two months or so to keep you're hair healthy and at it's best and most radient. Please, before you do something like shave you're head, make sure you will not regret it and do you're research first! It'll take you a -long- time to grow it back.
(Sorry if I'm making numerous posts here, I'm not sure they are working but this is the last one.)--posted by Linda @ Saturday, June 25 2005, 4:42 am PDT
Ack... First of all Laura, WHY did you even shave you're head? -hug- I'm not trying to be rude or insensitive in the slightest, but I'm only going to state my own opinion. Shaving you're head wether or not you are a boy or girl, it all brings two words to my mind along with many others in the fashion industry: Not Attractive. At least not for everyone. I'm a professional beauty instructor specializing in hair and make up for over seven years now and have worked at many well known salons, so trust me people, I know the trends and I know what I'm talking about! Sure shaving you're head makes it alot easier to take care of you're hair(in this case, no hair), but it usually exagerates the -wrong- features and people simply don't know any better, I'm sorry to say, but in most it ends up looking horrible, or greatly regretted. The shaved look really only works for very few people depending on their features and facial shape and weight.(I can't stress this enough-Overweight people should NOT ever shave their head, same goes with very short hair... Short hair is considered from the shoulders or higher.) Shorter/less hair makes an overweight persons face look wider and unfortunately rounder, bangs that reach the chin don't compliment someone who is already overweight either or even a slender person with a round face shape. In the same way; a person with a lanky shaped head, cheekbones being either concave or convex or very very thin--a shaved head will only promote those lanky features. Note that when you shave you're head you're features and everything on you're face practically leaps out ten times more to people then it would if you DID have hair(things like acne, scaring, rosacea, birth marks, freckles/moles, etc...)Before you do something as dramatic as shaving you're head or cutting you're hair incredibly short, you should really look up what kind of hairstyle is best for you're face shape first as well, which you can do easily with something like www.google.com, or go to a salon and ask advice(it's free most of the time). It's a statistic that more and more women and men love their partners of either sex to have long hair/medium hair,SOME hair. It's something to run you're fingers through and gives you that extra flow and wave, that extra splash of color that could highlight you're best features instead of haveing you're face blend in with a bald head. think of hair as completing a masterpiece painting.
(here's the beginning part of that last post-- I hope you find it helpful and wish you luck in you're braveness.)--posted by Linda @ Saturday, June 25 2005, 4:43 am PDT
Hair usually grows about an inch a month, and this is true because I've been growing it since February and it's now four inches long. I'm aiming for six by the end of August, then I'm getting an undercut. By the time I go to university, I'm aiming for twelve or shoulder length. Sorry, Adam, but my experiences of wearing hats when growing out has made me lose hair before, so I wouldn't advise doing it a lot!

Someone one here said that hair grows one to two inches a month. They need to check their facts because hair only grows half an inch a month and nothing will make it grow any faster then that.

I would NEVER shave my hair off. It looked bad enough at 1 inch, I hated it.
I'm growing it back. I spike some of it.
I'm worried it'll look bad because the spikes are much shorter than my other hair.
My spikes are about 1" the back is about a half an inch the bangs are about 3 inches and the rest is about 3 and a half inches.--posted by Ka @ Thursday, November 24 2005, 21:17 pm PST

Adam,
My fiance thinks short hair on women is for lesbians. I'm having my stick straight, light brown locks cut into a chin length, ultra layered, very feminine coif in a few days. He is really freaking out about it (luckily he's an hour and a half away at the university of delaware untill about 4:00 PM on friday) so I'm kind of anxious about him seeing my new do. My point is; do most men find shorter hair on a woman attractive if the style is right? Keith, my fiance, is obsesesed with long hair on women and doesn't like change for that matter. Oh yeah, he's studying to be a computer programmer and has a short (about 2 and a half inches long), straight, typical male, haircut. So all computer programmers don't have long hair. I remembered the quip from the beginning of the page.--posted by Megan @ Monday, February 20 2006, 22:05 pm PST
I agree with the person that says hair grows about 1/2 inch per month. Make sure you use a good shampoo and conditioner. This is very important for giving hair what it needs for optimal growth. Make sure you are getting enough nutrition. Taking vitamins is great for hair. It may not speed up growth but you will be feeding the hair from withing. Hair grows from the follicle which is under the scalp. Stimulate your follicles by massaging your scalp. This helps with blood flow. Get enough protein in your diet. Drink milk and water.
I had my hair clippered recently with a #2 due to a "stylist" improperly highlighting my hair. I have thick, coarse, dark hair. I made an appointment with her. She works in a reputable salon. Well I found out when I got there she was working on a friend's hair. I know stylist normally book other appointments while doing a color job. Well she puts bleach on my hair using foils. I really wanted hightlights done with color. I told her this when I made the appointment. I never had bleach used on my hair. I found out it was bleach after I saw her applying a white paste. Well after foiling, she puts me under a dryer for about 40 minutes. I think she forgot about me. After she took the foils out and put a toner on it I looked at it and the whole top of my head was an ugly blonde. There were no highlights. I looked like Dee Snider from his Twisted Sister days. Blonde on top with dark ends. Plus it felt like straw. The only thing to do was cut it all off. I wasn't about to wait for hair to fall out from the overprocessed mess. This has taught me to be careful with what I call hairmessers. They can really put you in hair hell. I have a round shape to my head. I'm petite with large blue eyes. People say I can wear this. Can and wanting to wear it are two different things. Cutting it all off was the only option for me. I don't want to keep hair because I'm "growing" it. Too many stylist have this mentality. I want to get my healthy hair back and let it all grow out from a cut that has a good basic shape. Please do not judge people that have a shaved head look. It just may be from sickness, alopecia or because of some idiot stylist.
My question is because I have thick coarse hair with the clipper look as it grows out start getting thick and clumpy? I don't want blunt ends. I know I will go through all the agony of growing but will it eventually look okay? Any help is appreciated.--posted by Pam @ Tuesday, March 28 2006, 8:16 am PST
