1D Horizontal Line Remover

Before
Before

In 1D files where the top portion of the image is either dark or underexposed, there is a tendency to see a thin, dark line along the top of the image. This line runs horizontally (vertically, if the image was shot in portrait mode) across the image, starting about 65 pixels from the top.

You can see this dark, horizontal line in the image to the right. The line does not appear in bright or overexposed areas, only in those areas that are dark and underexposed. The line ranges from 3-5 pixels in height and is composed of a random assortment of dark pixels.

It is unclear what causes this horizontal line to form, but it often appears hand in hand with banding in 1D images where there are lots of underexposed or dark areas.

Note: A reader on Rob Galbraith's forum pointed out a tip from Canon to eliminante the horizontal line if you select Personal Function 21 to set the camera's shooting mode to quiet. This tip does work, but only in single-frame shooting, not continuous or timer shooting. This setting also causes the sound of the camera to be different when a photo is taken, which you may or may not like.

After
After

Update: On February 27, 2002, Canon announced a fix for the dark horizontal line issue in conjunction with their 1.3 firmware update for the EOS-1D. Cameras shipping with firmware 1.2 and above already have this fix, which requires the camera to be sent to Canon for updating.

Update: March 19, 2002. Sending your pre-1.2 firmware 1D to Canon will fix the HNL issue on your camera. I received mine today and it no longer exhibits the thin horizontal black stripe across my high ISO images. Good job, Canon! The following action is only necessary for existing images that you have shot.

Note, however, that if you set P.Fn 21 on your camera, the horizontal line noise will appear in your high ISO images.

How it works

The 1D Horizontal Line Remover action was designed to reduce or eliminate this horizontal line from your 1D images.

The 1D Horizontal Line Remove has been run on the image to the right. While you can see a slight horizontal line where the original line was, it's much less pronounced.

The action really is quite simple. It first creates a 2464x3 pixel selection 65 pixels from the top of the image. The selection is further constrained to only dark areas using the Color Range menu item. Next, the median noise filter of 2 pixels is applied. The selected area now looks a little blurry, so we now apply a 2% monochromatic uniform noise filter.

Note: Sometimes it is necessary to run this action multiple times to reduce the visibility of or eliminate altogether the horizontal line.

Tips and Tricks

Create a duplicate layer of the background and apply the filter one or multiple times. Then, hide and show this duplicate layer to see the results of the 1D Horizontal Line Remover action. When you are satisfied with the results, flatten the image.

Hi, Adam:

I am very impressed by your photograhic work on your website. I own a Minolta DiMAGE 7 and am playing with it often in hope of mastering it soon. Is the correction program for your Canon EOS-1D made by Canon? or it is offered by Adobe? (Since I am wondering if there is the kit made for my DiMAGE 7i, though)

Thanks, Adam!

Regards,
Mike Chuang
