Snapshots at The Metro

Short dances in a small space at the Oakland Metro.

On Saturday night, Rae's dance company, Facing East Dance & Music performed at the Oakland Metro near Jack London Square. Accompanying Facing East was Jason Britton Dance Company, Courage Group, and musicians Jeff Chan and Vijay Anderson.

It's been some time since I've seen Facing East perform. They have been working every week on choreography for their Angel Island Dance Project, opening this coming September. It's hard to believe that half the year has already gone by. Where has all the time gone?

The lighting, albeit challenging, wasn't the most difficult obstacle to overcome last night. What made it difficult was the fact that most of the dances were done in either silence or with very soft accompanying music. I often felt like I was a fraction of a second too late with a number of pieces. Still, there were a number of nice images that came out from the evening, a sampling of which is shown below.

Adam,

I'm curious, your pictures are great - how do you get such great, low noise, low light pictures? Is it all about the camera?

(I don't have a digital SLR yet, but my current camera (Canon S50) takes ok low light shots.. I've tried a few dance performances, and even at a highish ISO, they are blurry).

Thanks, Lucien

Always Great photos on the fly, Adam!!
Makes me wonder what you could do if we set the space and light to accommodate YOU!
I appreciate your support of Rae and the company with your presence and images....
I would like to post some of these on the FEDM site if possible--or link to you. Let me know,
Sue

Lucien:

I shoot with a Canon EOS-1D, a digital SLR. It performs very well in low-light conditions when coupled with a good lens. I shot the evening primarily with a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS (image stabilized) lens. Getting good performance photos requires a combination of photographic skill and equipment.
