Part 2: Lost Coast

Introduction - Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

The Impassable Section

Tobias Kline

Friday

I woke up around 7:00-8:00 in the morning. Both Brett and Maddie were still asleep when I exited the tent with my photographic gear.

King Peak

We headed off for King Peak at 11:00 am. The weather was gorgeous, and there wasn't a hint of rain in the sky above. Before I left, I checked the weather for Whitethorn (95589) and Weather.com said that it would rain Thursday, which it did, as well as Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The first weather report that I read only had rain coming in on Thursday. It appeared from Friday and Saturday that the initial weather report was the most accurate.

Going up the tallest mountain on the Lost Coast makes for some wonderful Kodak moments.

We came across a shotgun shell along the way. What on earth would someone be doing with a shotgun on the Lost Coast? This is after all, the Lost Coast, not the Lost World!

17 backpacks, but where were the backpackers?

We were coming up to the trailhead to Saddle Mountain when we heard a female voice shot out. But, when we arrived at the trailhead, there was no one there, but there were 17 fully loaded backpacks lying on the ground. Where had the backpackers gone?

John and his pack of dogs

John mentioned that he worked for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). I asked him if it was hunting season, as I informed him that I found a shotgun shell along the trail. John told us that it was indeed hunting season, squirrel hunting season. They must have all been shot, since I didn't see a single four-legged wild creature the entire trip!
